A countersink is a kind of steel bit that is used to smooth the indentations that are made in iron and other metals or it is a machining process with which the holes for the screws are widened in a short portion of their length, in order to that the head of these is embedded in the drilled part.
There are several types of countersinks:
Cylindrical countersink
Steel cylinder adapted to the end of an iron square whose grooved surface serves to smooth the unevenness left by the bit when drilling metals. Its most common use is to fix the calibers of portable firearms.
Conical countersink
A kind of tapered and octagonal steel drill. It is commonly used to widen holes, for screws or where the head of the bolts must rest so that it is recessed, and to fix the nozzles of hollow projectiles. The inclination of the grooves varies depending on whether they are intended to cut metal or wood.
Spherical countersink
Auger like the previous one formed by a grooved steel sphere. There are also hemispherical ones. The former are generally used to polish the cavity of turquoise, to melt lead bullets, and the latter to widen and round certain cavities in wood or iron.
