AkzoNobel NV, known commercially as AkzoNobel, is a Dutch multinational company specializing in decorative paints, industrial paints and specialty chemicals. Its headquarters are located in Amsterdam. The company is active in more than eighty countries and employs approximately 50,000 people.
AkzoNobel is the world's largest decorative and industrial paints company. In 2010 the company had a turnover of 14.6 billion euros, which places it as one of the 500 companies with the highest turnover globally. In 2008 the company was named as the most profitable in the world.
The current AzkoNobel is the product of multiple mergers and acquisitions of companies. Some parts of the company are the replacement of companies of the seventeenth century. The first of these, called Bofors Forge, was founded in Sweden in 1646.
The company as we know it began in 1969 with the founding of AKZO. Later, in 1994 it merged with the Swedish company Nobel Industries (founded by Alfred Nobel) giving way to AkzoNobel. The last relevant restructuring was in 2008 when it merged with Imperial Chemical Industries (also known as ICI) and gave way to the current name AkzoNobel.
It is one of the 100 companies listed on the European Euronext stock index. Furthermore, it is also one of the 25 companies listed on the Dutch selective index, called AEX.
