Bonsai Podocarpus (Podocarpus - Buddhist Pine)

Situation: In areas with a Mediterranean climate, outdoors, in full sun all year round. In colder areas, winter protection is advisable. It must be protected from frost.

Irrigation: abundantly in summer and moderately in winter.

Curiosities: The podocarpus is a conifer from tropical and subtropical regions of the planet. It is also known by the Buddhist name of pine. In female podocarpus, the coloring of the fleshy receptacle that holds the fruits is spectacular, due to its colorations ranging from red to purple.

ETYMOLOGY

From the Greek "podos", foot, and "karpos", fruit, because the seed is attached to a fleshy receptacle.

Every 3 or 5 years in spring.

SUBSTRATUM

100% Akadama, or mixed with 20% volcanic gravel.

PRUNING

At the beginning of spring budding, always leaving leaves or buds, otherwise the branch could dry out.

GRIPPING

Clamping is carried out throughout the growing season, pinching the new shoots, breaking them in half.

WIRING

It can be done throughout the year.
