Recycle a used door

April 23, 2020

When we carry out reforms in homes, one of the elements that we usually change are the doors, either because we want another more modern one or one that combines better with the decorative style of the rooms. These used doors that are replaced are usually shipped or stored in a shed, in the basement or simply discarded. However, you can follow our Brycus tips and give that used door of yours a new use

How to recycle a used door and put it to new use in your home

Create a countertop or sideboard with an old door

You will need a little more wood to place the pillars and make compartments, in case you make a sideboard, but the result will be lovely. The door will be used as the main surface and underneath it the 4 pillars will be fixed, which can be made of wood of 10 cm x 10 cm and a height of 90 cm. It is advisable to clean the door, sand it and apply a glaze that is uniform with the rest of the structure. You can even use techniques such as patina to give your new piece of furniture a sensational and jovial appearance.

Create a children's slate or decorate your home

Many wooden doors contain a wooden frame and inside one or more sections made of wood. Doors that have a single section or large sections on the inside are great for creating slates. You will need to clean and sand down the entire door, in the interior sections it is important to achieve a completely smooth and even finish. You will then need to apply the glaze to the frame, which will be the frame of your slate, you can apply patina techniques or some other technique that will give you a style that matches your surroundings. Then with the help of paper tape you should cover all the edges near the interior sections of the door, this with the intention of when you apply the slate paint the finish is perfect and the edges of the frame or frame are not stained. After painting the interior sections you must wait at least 12 hours to be able to handle the slate and fix it with anchors in the place of your preference, likewise, it is advisable to wait 24 hours to start writing on it.

Creating a vintage door

Antique doors can add a special touch to many areas of your home, especially those related to food or drink. Therefore, they look spectacular in pantries, kitchens, dining rooms, bars and other places where you could share a drink or a delicious dinner in the company of friends or family. A wonderful option is to opt for glazes and hardware that give a very old finish to your doors. You can even find a great variety of glazes specially designed for this purpose in the market. All you have to do is sand and repaint. As far as hardware is concerned, forging gives a romantic and old-fashioned appearance. You can find complements to make hinged or sliding installations, in this aspect it is important to analyze space availability and choose the one that best suits your needs.

Coat rack with used door

This is one of the most practical ways to use a used door. The restoration process is the same, sand and paint with the enamel of your preference, but you must also fix one or more wall hangers on the door, this depending on your needs and the length of the hangers purchased. The used door will provide a warm and cosy background to the coat rack. You can place this magical coat rack in the hall of your home as well as in your room.

Create a storage area in the kitchen

It's a similar idea to the hall or bedroom coat racks, however, in our Brycus tips we also recommend using this piece of furniture made with your own hands in the kitchen. The hangers will be essential for hanging cups and tidying up your kitchenware. In addition, you can also add other types of towel racks for your kitchen. The doors also adapt perfectly to bars, and with special fittings and supports you can order glasses, cups and other items from your bar.
