Protect your outdoor furniture with teak oil

April 25, 2020

Outdoor furniture is an ideal partner when the weather is good, the sun hours are longer and the outdoors becomes much more attractive. Choose what type of furniture are the most recommended, place them properly and enjoy them is a pleasure. But this situation has a small drawback, the resistance of those furniture. Outdoor furniture has to withstand various atmospheric conditions, so they are much more punished than indoor furniture. Sun, rain or wind will affect this furniture in one way or another. Applying adequate protection is the best idea to achieve a good durability of these.

Teak is a type of wood widely used for the manufacture of this type of furniture because it is among the most resistant woods that exist. In spite of this, if the adequate and periodic maintenance is not applied, the teak furniture can acquire a silver-gray color. Restore them is not complicated and can also be much cheaper taking advantage of the existing brycus offer.

To carry out this vital treatment to provide protection and provide greater durability to outdoor furniture, the first step is to sand them. With the help of a fine grain sandpaper and applying only a light pressure you must remove the surface layer of the furniture. In this way the treatment with teak oil will be much more effective in getting the oil to impregnate well in the wood. Do not forget to remove the dust that is generated when you pass the sandpaper. Help with a dry cloth is the best option to perform this step more quickly and comfortably. If this step is not carried out, the impurities removed with the sanding will be adhered to the wood once the oil is applied, making the maintenance of these oils not the most appropriate.

One of the advantages of teak oil, which can be found in the brycus offer, is that, unlike typical protectors and varnishes, it does not form a film on the surface of the wood. This fact allows to preserve its natural appearance and its touch, without modifying the benefits of the original wood. This makes treatment with teak oil the best option to protect furniture from the elements, as well as possible grease stains.

This oil can be applied in two different ways, with the help of a platen or with a roller. Both procedures are equally effective, the choice of one or the other depends on the availability of materials, as well as the ability of the person who will perform this treatment. To apply the teak oil, the entire surface of the wood must be impregnated. It is recommended that a generous and homogeneous layer of oil be applied. Then it should be allowed to dry for approximately twenty minutes. The product protects the wood by means of a process of impregnation, that is, it penetrates into its pores so that the quantity of product that the wood is not able to introduce in said pores supposes an excess and can be removed with a cloth.

After this first application, the oil should be allowed to dry for the time indicated on the product canister. Subsequently, the previous operation can be repeated, although it is not necessary.

A trick to check that the surface of a piece of furniture has been properly protected is to put a few drops of water on it. In this way, if the water penetrates the wood it means that the treatment is not correctly applied and the furniture has not been completely waterproofed, so it would be advisable to apply another layer of teak oil. If on the contrary the drops remain on the surface without being absorbed this is indicative that it is not necessary to apply more layers, since the wood is protected from the adverse atmospheric conditions.

Teak oil not only provides protection, but also embellishes the wood and protects it against stains. That is why teak oil treatment is highly recommended to keep outdoor furniture in perfect condition both in new furniture and old furniture. In the case of applying it on new furniture the oil will make them resistant to the passage of time. In the case of applying it to antique furniture, teak oil helps them recover their original appearance.
