Diesel or Gasoline when choosing an electric generator

April 1, 2020

When we consider the option of buying a new electric generator, we always wonder which option will be the most advantageous for us, whether a generator with a diesel engine or one with a petrol engine. If we want to analyse the issue in depth, there are many other factors to consider. From Brycus Advice we analyze the advantages and disadvantages of both engines, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs.

Diesel or Gasoline when choosing an electric generator
Comparison between diesel and gasoline

In order to further analyze which type of engine can be most adapted to our needs, we have to compare both engines from different factors, such as price, fuel type, fuel consumption, noise, possible failures and engine life. In our Brycus tips section, we compare both engines and analyze them for your information.

Price comparison

The first factor that may interest us is the price of the generator. And at that point the advantage is always for the gasoline engine, because it is a much cheaper engine than the diesel engine. This difference in price is mainly due to two factors that we will have to take into account.

Diesel engines support a greater effort, therefore, they must be more consistent and heavier than gasoline engines. On the other hand, diesel engines need gas treatment systems that are more complicated than petrol engines. Both factors make the product more expensive to manufacture and increase its price.

Fuel type comparison

In reference to the type of fuel we are interested in two factors mainly, the price of the fuel and the safety of the same one. At present the price of diesel fuel is cheaper than petrol, so we are interested in the price of acquiring a diesel engine. On the other hand, diesel is less volatile than gasoline, which makes it a safer and more reliable fuel.

Therefore, based on the type of fuel we are going to use when buying an electric generator, the diesel generator would be the best purchase option.

Comparison on consumption

Today it is the diesel engine that has the lowest fuel consumption. The higher performance of the diesel engine and the higher density of its fuel, causes a need for lower consumption than the gasoline engine. Taking into account the consumption of both engines, the best option would undoubtedly be the electric generator with a diesel engine.

Comparison of service life and possible breakdowns

Although this point is perhaps one of the most controversial, if we look at the statistics between the duration of one type of engine and another, it is the diesel engine that is the most durable of the two. But in turn, diesel engines suffer more complex and therefore more expensive breakdowns.

When considering durability and possible breakdowns, we cannot clearly recommend one of the two. Because, in this case, both engines have their advantages and disadvantages.

Noise comparison

Diesel engines are the ones that work with the highest pressure, therefore, they are also the ones that produce the highest vibration and therefore much more noise. But we have to take into account that in both engines, these vibrations can be suppressed by different elements and measures. Therefore, although the best option would be a priori the petrol engine, we will have to see the real noise depending on the suppression elements that each engine has.

To conclude with our Brycus advice, we will be interested in one engine or another for our electric generator depending on the use we are going to give it. For a more continuous use, it will be recommended the diesel engine and for a punctual use the gasoline engine. In any case, do not hesitate, come to our shop and discover all our offer in electric generators.
