A mechanical hammer, also known as a pneumatic hammer, pavement breaker, paving machine or pavement demolition machine, is a machine, generally for professional use, that is used for the purpose of demolishing pavements, drilling large holes or demolishing constructions of various kinds. There are three types, pneumatic, hydraulic and electric.
The pneumatic hammer is a portable hammer drill that bases its operation on compressed air mechanisms. It really works like a hammer, as it does not pierce but strikes the surface in order to break it into pieces.
Its main parts are:
The hilt. With air control valve and to which the hose is connected.
The distributor. Regulates the air control and sends it on either side of the plunger
The cylinder. Where the plunger is located and where it moves, striking the head of the tool located at the lower end of the hammer and with which it is working.
Its use on vertical surfaces (eg walls) is not practical: it is difficult to keep the appliance in a horizontal position, which is generally high in mass, and the advantage that its own weight keeps it supported is lost.
It is usually handled by one person. The power source is an independent compressor equipment, capable of supplying an adequate volume of compressed air to the tool.
